Chimney Sweep
Most manufacturers and insurance companies recommend that wood-burning chimneys and appliances be inspected at least every 12 months, as per the National Fire Code of Canada, to ensure it remains in good, safe working order. It is important that you check what your insurance company’s requirements are.
National Fire Code: 2.6.1.4
Every chimney, flue and flue pipe shall be inspected to identify any dangerous condition
- At intervals not greater than 12 months
- At the time of addition of any appliance
- After any chimney fire
Chimneys, flues and flue pipes shall be cleaned as often as necessary to keep them free from dangerous accumulations of combustible deposits.
A chimney, flue and flue pipe shall be replaced or repaired to eliminate
- Any structural deficiency or decay, and
- All abandoned or unused openings that are not effectively sealed in a manner that would prevent the passage of fire or smoke.
A common misconception is that your chimney should be swept in the fall, just before the wood-burning season begins, but it is actually better to do so in the spring, just after the wood-burning season. The reason for this is that burning wood creates soot and creosote (corrosive materials) that build-up on the inside of your system. When left over the summer and into the fall, that corrosive material sits in the system and wears it down. Getting your chimney swept at the end of the wood-burning season will help to extend the life of your system.
